雨果说过“贫穷使男人粗暴,使女人下
贱,使孩子羸弱。”看过了这本书后,还真
是一言难竟。
如果说21世纪是崭新的一个纪元,那么
贫穷将是如同顽疾般需要给予剔除。

a nice story, as a story. I read
it, caring whether it is based on
the truth. I read it just because I
hope it is based on some truth,
although the truth is nothing
better, for all the articles under
this directory should be based on
truth, or else there is no need to
read them.
at lease something is based on the
truth: the job of the waitress.
if it is really the truth, life of
chinese really has its dark face,
which makes me upset. |

The plot is similar to Pretty
Women, or Cinderella. I enjoyed
reading it overall. But, what
bother me are the hypocrisy and the
over rationalizations of its
characters. For example,
when "Yang wei", the restaurant
owner showed up for "business" for
the first time, the main character
self-righteously chided him for
being a two-faced dog. What
hypocrisy! She was doing the deal
on the other side purely to fulfill
her own superficial, materialistic
needs and unrealistic ideals. She
is overly idealistic, self-
disillusioned at best and selfish,
irresponsible, manipulative at
worst. I don't see how someone w/
that level of internal
inconsistency can be at peace w/
him/herself w/o a muted conscience
or massive self-justifying
rationalizations and denies. That
can be said about the hero, ah-
meng, too. As someone who grew up
in Shanghai, I can emphasize w/ the
glorified romantic notion of
gangsters and the utilitarian
mentality that the author
protrait. I am critical of this
particular type of relativistic
value-system/mentality that's
typical of Shanghainese(or is it
Chinese?) It partially symbolizes
what's wrong w/ China today. To be
fair, Americans in America
certainly has a fair share of that
mentality too; it's not restricted
to just Shanghai or China. But it's
not as main stream or pervasive
here in the US as in China. Uh-oh,
I am getting into moral grounds
here. This is becoming a whole new
discussion so I will just stop by
saying that this was an
entertaining story and I understand
where the author is coming from.
It was a good opportunity for me to
brush up my Chinease. Now I just
need to stop procrastinating and go
back to finish my MBA application. |

I never get used to shanghai dialectic
culture although i love many people
there. Especially i feel sorry the
protagonist in this book graduated
from the same university as i(that's
why i really hope this is only a novel,
even though, i am curious about why
the author take this university as the
background? is there any necessary
correlation). Only seven monthes ago,
I was deep in "sadness" for that some
students graduated from this university
having the courage and taste to publish
a novel named" shanghai baby" but not
keep as a private diary. Seven monthes
later, i am again shocked by the poor
taste of one of its product, the only
difference is this is USA. Probably,
this aestheism and view of life is just
the benchmark and brand of the
culture breeding them. As is the skin
color, they can never change it. |

I can not understand why she take the
most indecent and untolerable way:
while rest comfortble on the material
pleasure, describe all the past in a way
cheating the reader to sympathisize in
the deepest of their heart. that is really
a conspiracy to realize her
motto:winner-take-all.
I read only the former nine chapters
and the later two chapter, it is an
effortless work for you to find how
many contradictory evidence has been
imprudently used to demonstrate his
innocence and the tragedy of being
torn by the conflict between the soul
and mundane desire. All the
description, in my eyes, a joke.
A most convenient example, if
chenyan, the poor doctor, own that
thing the woman expected in the
bottom of her soul, will she still stick
to the belief the guy is not the man for
her? she justify this by saying she keep
alive the deadless and traditional
chinese sentiment to a real"man" and
commit to the pure romance . what a
knox of romanticism and innocence.
I would like to read a novel about how
a man strike but finally loose or how
we human is distorted by everything
we experience although we finally
might get a seemingly all-happy result
nomatter if we can really have the
pleasure as the outsider has imagined.
Perhaps i am stupid to write so much
about a novel, i hope it is only a novel,
only a poor mimic of "Beijingness in
newyork" by a shanghai man or
woman. |

almost from the first chapter, i sensen
something similar in terms of the
article style and the description of the
psychological state. I am not sure what
it is. finally( only after going through
the second chapter) i made it out, it is
typical sort of shanghai mood tinted by
a little American color or shaded by
sort of sick sentiment. I am not cynical
and radical about any other's view of
the world, i just can not tolerate that
kind of behavior and person while can
not hide the innate secular and wordly
desire which is as profund as any
others', they strike to find excuse or
give a detail description on the violent
conflict between soul and the filthy
desire to justify their final choice,
maybe they want to tell the reader: Hi,
i have to, the world is so cold and
cruel, I just can not go witout trading
with satan part of my soul. Really,?
since everybody here knows well
American is where the extreme
utilitarianism prevail and a world
winner-take-all, if the protagonist in
this novel feel good and satisfactory
about her life, i can suggest at least
three much better ways for him to take
rather than give a demonstration of her
awkward effors to justify all his
behavior: first, she might hide away all
her history and live in a complete
noble style; second, just show off,
behave in a way similiar in every
detail similar to a poor upstart; Third,
take the stance of a Strong woman, the
posture of a winner and put on air to
broadcast her own philosophy on the
struggle to life's acme. If somebady
dare to point finger toward her history,
she can simply fight back by saying :
don't you know winner-take-all?
actually, she might cancel all the
history by even persuding herself to
believe that all the past is a dream, of
course, anybody tend to give a
exposure about all that things subject
to juristic consequences. |
