I can still remember that in 82, my cousin was reading books all night to prepare for the exam to the graduate school. It is true that you have to have at least high-school equivalent degree (zhong1 zhuan1) to enter the exam for graduate school. This is a very good novel. I like it because it truthfully reflects the life I have experienced. I think in that era, most people led a frustrating but bland life. You have to struggle so hard for basics of a decent life. I think this fundamental restraint of the society at that time causes dilemma for any author trying to base his novel on that period. Cultural Revolution was already calming down. Young men from city had already been worn down in country side. Economy is facing collapse. Everything is rationed. But restrictions are severe and everywhere. Everyone is poor. My parents struggled to make do with 120 YMB, which is a fortune to ordinary farmers. My father's relatives living in Canton could not survive without receiving money and ticket for rice from us in every spring. Any drama and strong emotion will look out of place in this period. But, even today in US with a job of sofware engineer, I am still struggling to raise a family, the most ordinary goal. I need all part of my life to be expressed, including that grey period. | |
