Namu – the daughter I never got. Having two sons only, you are curious
about the woman they are to choose. When Thoralf met Namu, he called home
very exciting saying : “ I am so in love, it’s like a fairy – tail ”
.
After a short time he sent pictures, and I said to myself : “ What
on earth. ” I was very sceptical and wondered : “ How is this girl with
the long legs and the short skirts ?”
Some months later we flew to Beijing to visit Thoralf. His dad tried
to worn him about the culture differences and tell him about the general
difficulties about living together, but he would not listen.
A few days after our arrival, Namu came from San Francisco to meet us.
She went straight into my heart. I remember the two of us sitting by the
kitchen table drinking tea, Namu telling her story about her childhood,
her youth and her years in America. She was openhearted and showed me confidence.
After some days the four of us went to a restaurant, and Namu brought
me a gift. It was a picture frame saying positive things about a mother.
She had brought it from USA. I asked her why she gave it to me then, and
she answered : “ First I had to see what kind of mother you were. I was
really touched.
Thanks to Namu ,Thoralf learned a lot about the country he was working
in. They had a great time together. In China Namu too was able to do her
own work, writing books, doing shows, seeing her friends and family. Living
in Europe was much more difficult, the culture differences became more clear.
Even if Namu was writing in Geneva too, it was hard for her to be so far
away from the possibilities she had in her home country.
I miss Namu, I love her, and every day I take her along in my morning
prayer.
For me Namu will always be the daughter I never got.
